Our journey to a greener South Portslade

Discover the story behind South Portslade Tree Planting, how we started, our achievements, and the passionate individuals driving our mission to transform our local environment.

Our roots: how it all began

The South Portslade Tree Planting initiative was sparked by a desire to enhance our local area. Our journey began when we applied for funding through the Better Brighton and Hove fund. A significant turning point was when the charity CPRE Sussex contacted us, offering invaluable support through their Plant Your Postcode initiative. These key moments laid the groundwork for our efforts to green up South Portslade.

Our vision: a greener future for South Portslade

South Portslade currently has a tree canopy cover of only 8.4%, significantly less than many other wards in Brighton & Hove. The city's average canopy cover is 10.5%, well below the national average of 16.4%.

Due to disease, we are losing more trees than Brighton and Hove Council can afford to replace. Planting new street trees in South Portslade will benefit residents, commuters, businesses, and school children alike, offering cleaner air, climate change mitigation, mental health benefits, and more attractive streets.

The council has agreed there are viable sites for tree planting in South Portslade, and we are committed to making this vision a reality.

Meet the people behind the trees

South Portslade Tree Planting is entirely led by passionate local residents. We are supported by CPRE Sussex and Brighton and Hove Council's Tree Officer, working collaboratively to achieve our goals. Our driving force is a shared desire to green up Portslade, making it a nicer place to live, work, and go to school for everyone. This community-driven spirit is at the heart of everything we do.
